SYSTEMS OF REPRESENTATION: A CULTURE LABORATORY

Prof. Lily Díaz, Prof. Sofia Pantouvaki and Urszula Pawlica, PhD lead different sessions. Office hours are Thursdays from 14:00-16:00 at Otakaari 1, Room A-114.

Learning objectives: Using three case studies, participants learn about systems-oriented design frameworks to digital media design that can be used when developing your own art and design productions. MA, DA candidates are welcome. 

Methods used:  In the course we will use Case Studies and speculative design interventions that address the relevance of Time, Body and Space across cultures and contexts.

Lecture/presentation 1: What is representation? What is a system? Why are these so important in media design? 30/01 (LDK)

Lecture/presentation 2: What is an ontology? Why it is relevant to media design? 06/02 (UP)

Case study 1: Time and its representation in narrative. 13/02 (LDK) 

Time: Time and its representation in narrative. Using mixed methods and content materials from anthropology, history and media archeology, research and analyze how the representation of time is constructed differently in genres and narratives across different cultures and epochs. 13/02 (LDK). The role of archives in the creation of art and design discourses. (SK, MS, TÖ) NOTE: This session will be held at the ARTS Archives facilities in the Learning Centre.

Case study 2:  Exhibiting the body 

The body: 06/03 (SP) Costume exhibition is developed as a system. Using a multimethod approach, we bring together archive materials with intangible testimony to create a record and out of this create a system/representation. Key questions include, How is the body represented? How do you relate this to the visitor?

Case Study 3: Space and digital media

Case study 3: Space. 03/04 (LDK) Using mixed methods we explore digital media’s use to augment and extend our sense of space and experience in exhibition spaces. A series of case studies from real world examples are presented.

Evaluation is done according to active participation in the course (80% is required) as well as by work developed and produced.

Students can earn 3 credits minimum. There is an option for independent work if more credits are needed or desired.
