Learning Outcomes (valid 01.08.2018-31.07.2020):

Students understand physical phenomenon of drying and evaporation as well as the most common drying and evaporation processes. Students understand how to improve the energy efficiency of dryers and evaporators. Students are able to solve practical engineering problems related to drying and evaporation processes.

Content (valid 01.08.2018-31.07.2020):

Water in porous material

Drying and evaporation as a physical phenomena

Means to affect heat and electricity consumptions of drying and evaporation processes

The most common industrial dryers and evaporators

Selection of dryers and evaporators for different industrial processes.

See section details on the schedule

Assessment Methods and Criteria (valid 01.08.2018-31.07.2020):

Execution: Lectures + exercises

Assessment methods and criteria: Exam. You must get 7.5/20 points in the exam to pass the course. You can get extra points by returning calculation problems. Extra points are taken into account since you have passed the exam.

Elaboration of the evaluation criteria and methods, and acquainting students with the evaluation (applies in this implementation):

To
pass the course you must get 7.5/20 points in the exam. This is the only
requirement.

More information on passing the course in section details on the schedule .

Individual studying 99h

Details on calculating the workload (applies in this implementation):

Lectures 20h

Exercises 10h

Exam 3h

Individual work 102h

Study Material (valid 01.08.2018-31.07.2020):

Compedium + other additional material

Book: Mujumdar Arun S. Handbook of industrial drying Vol. 1

Details on the course materials (applies in this implementation):

For students, who understand Finnish, a course handout

Holmberg Henrik, Ramm-Schmidt Leif, Kuivaus- ja haihdutusprosessit teollisuudessa. You can download the Finnish course material on MyCourse as a pdf-file

For students, who do not understand Finnish, the following handbook

Mujumdar Arun S. (editor), Handbook of Industrial Drying (e.g. second version). The following chapters

Chapter 1: Drying of solids: Principles, classification, and selection of dryers

Chapter 3: Basic process calculations

Chapter 4: Transport properties in the drying of solids (Moisture diffusivity, Equilibrium moisture content)

Chapter 35: Superheated steam drying

The book contains a lot of imformation on various dryers. This is additional material.

For all students

A compendium about thermodynamics of humid air. You can download the material as pdf-file on MyCourses.

All lecture slides will be uploaded on MyCourses.

Substitutes for Courses (valid 01.08.2018-31.07.2020):

Ene-59.4130. Kuivatus- ja haihdutusprosessit teollisuudessa

Prerequisites (valid 01.08.2018-31.07.2020):

Energy and mass balances of stationary flow systems and thermodynamics of humid air

Grading Scale (valid 01.08.2018-31.07.2020):

0-5

Details on the schedule (applies in this implementation):

The course has 10 lectures and 5 calculation exercises. Every calculation exercise has a "Star Problem". If you solve the star problem and submit it for grading you can get some extra points. You can maximally get 2.5 extra points. These points are taken into account in exam points since you have passed the exam. In other words, you must first get the minimum number points (7.5/20 points) before the extra points are considered.

Preliminary course content and schedule will be uploaded on MyCourses in the beginnig of the course
