Laajuus: 5

Aikataulu: 18.03.2019 - 27.05.2019

Kurssin yhteystiedot (koskee tätä kurssikertaa):

Teachers in charge of this course are Assoc. Prof. Ville Viikari, and Univ. Lect. Clemens Icheln, plus there is one course assistant (Riku Kormilainen).

Opetusperiodi (voimassa 01.08.2018-31.07.2020):

IV-V 2018 - 2019 (spring)
IV-V 2019 - 2020 (spring)

Osaamistavoitteet (voimassa 01.08.2018-31.07.2020):

The student is able to design and analyze simple microwave circuits and circuit components using CAD tools and/or analytical methods, as well as to describe key characteristics of different components and complete microwave systems.

Sisältö (voimassa 01.08.2018-31.07.2020):

Design of passive and active circuit components (such as filters, couplers, microstrip-line transitions, amplifiers, mixers, and oscillators). The design assignments can facilitate the design of a small radio system.

Tarkennukset kurssin sisältöön (koskee tätä kurssikertaa): After an initial recap of the fundamentals of impedance matching-circuit design we will look into the design of passive microwave components (resonators,
dividers, couplers, filters
) as well as the design of active microwave components (amplifiers, oscillators, mixers). Finally, the design of a small radio system using computer-aided design tools is carried out as group project.

Toteutus, työmuodot ja arvosteluperusteet (voimassa 01.08.2018-31.07.2020):

In-class quizzes, homework exercises, reporting group project results in a seminar, and final in-class quiz.

Tarkennetut arviointiperusteet ja -menetelmät ja tutustuminen arviointiin (koskee tätä kurssikertaa):

  • In-class quizzes (15 %): Students have to answer online quizzes during each
lecture, and presence in class is required to have these graded (no remote participation).
  • Homework exercises (55 %): Assignments are solved either
analytically (calculations) or using computer-aided design tools (e.g.
AWR), depending on the topic. The computer exercises can be solved
individually or collaboratively in groups depending on students' own
choice. However, students return their solutions to homework
assignments individually during a contact session where they are presented to a teacher in order to be graded.
The group-project presentation (and physical presence) in the
final seminar contributes to this grade.
  • Final quiz (30 %): The goal of the final quiz is to assess students' overall
comprehension of the course, whereas homework assignments concentrate on
a more detailed level. Presence is required to have the final quiz graded (no remote participation).

Työmäärä toteutustavoittain (voimassa 01.08.2018-31.07.2020):

Contact hours 48 h (2 x 3 h per week, 9.5 weeks). Independent work 87 h.

Tarkennettu kuormittavuuslaskelma (koskee tätä kurssikertaa): A suitable workload for a course with 5 ECTS is about 135 hours of working. In this course there are 10 x (2+3) hours = 50 hours of contact teaching (5 hours per week), leaving 85 hours of independent working (i.e. an average 8.5 hours per week). This number of hours for independent work is only indicative. It is subject to the pre-knowledge, skills and working "efficiency" of the student.

Oppimateriaali (voimassa 01.08.2018-31.07.2020):

D.M. Pozar: Microwave Engineering (3rd or 4th edition).

Tarkennukset oppimateriaaliin (koskee tätä kurssikertaa):

  • The course book is David M. Pozar Microwave Engineering (either 3rd or 4th ed.).
