Osaamistavoitteet (voimassa 01.08.2018-31.07.2020):

Student knows packet based core network operations and entities. Based on this knowledge used is able to understand the behavior of the complete network.

Sisältö (voimassa 01.08.2018-31.07.2020):

The course is introducing the backbone network implementation techniques in L2 and L3 layers. The main content is build around existing modern packet network technologies (IP, MPLS). New techniques (CGE, T-MPLS) which may challenge existing techniques will be introduced. Different network architectures of the trunk networks and related service architecture, data traffic control and supporting protocols. Main content of the course is about the study of different network mechanisms and protocols and their impact to the whole system behavior In the course we look also at the procedures for adding customers to the network and how common channel signalling is established. A big part of the course is dealing with legal and economical impacts to the network planning and provisioning the services. Project work.

These concepts related to network service providers will be covered in more detail:

  • Routing
  • BGP
  • MPLS
  • Carrier Ethernet
  • Service Level Agreements
  • Virtual Private Networks
  • QoS
  • DiffServ
  • OAM
  • IPv6

These will be more in the "nice to know" department:

Toteutus, työmuodot ja arvosteluperusteet (voimassa 01.08.2018-31.07.2020):

Compulsory: Pre-examination, project work & final examination.

Tarkennetut arviointiperusteet ja -menetelmät ja tutustuminen arviointiin (koskee tätä kurssikertaa):

Evaluation criteria wil be based on the following priciples:

  1. pre-examination, pass/fail
  2. project work, pass/fail
  3. final examination, grade 0-5

Pre-examination must be passed in order to be accepted for the course.  Note that the course lectures are organized only if 10 or more students pass the
preliminary exam!
If there are less than 10 students passing, an
alternative method of completing the course will be provided but only for those students who pass the pre-examination. This
method will consist self-learning material, project work, support
sessions and final examination.

Project work will consist of concepts that are discussed during the lectures but also concepts that are left for self study. Format for the work is a written report. Evaluation criteria is pass/fail.

The final exam will have 5 questions all of which have to be answered. Each question gives max. 6 points. >=15 points are required to pass the exam.

Työmäärä toteutustavoittain (voimassa 01.08.2018-31.07.2020):

Contact hours 36 h
Independent learning 85 h

Tarkennettu kuormittavuuslaskelma (koskee tätä kurssikertaa):

36 h means 12 lectures. However, as the number of lectures may vary, the number of hours for contact teaching may be slightly lower and thus the amount of independent learning higher.

Independent learning >= 85 h. This consist of:

  • preparing for preliminary exam
  • preparing for the lectures
  • project work
  • preparing for the exam
