After the course, students will be able to:

  • Apply concepts related to building blocks of matter
  • Understand the boundaries between classical and quantum descriptions of matter.
  • Describe the structure of atoms using quantum mechanical models
  • Explain how molecules are built from atoms
  • Apply concepts of chemical bonding
  • Apply concepts of crystal structure
  • Practice group work and disseminate results in written report and in oral presentation

Content (valid 01.08.2018-31.07.2020): 

The building blocks of matter and interatomic forces, solid and liquid. Introduction to quantum description of matter. Atomic physics. Introduction to crystal structure. Projects introduce: intermolecular forces, friction, surfaces, phase transitions.
