Objectives, relevance for practice and lecture topics
At the end of this course, students are expected to have developed theoretical and practical knowledge about entrepreneurship and innovation management and are able to apply those to real cases.
The foundation of an enterprise has several advantages, such as being your own boss, realizing your own ideas and experiencing greater autonomy in general. However, entrepreneurship is more than founding an enterprise. It is a particular way of thinking and an approach to solving problems and can, therefore, also be practiced in large corpora-tions (corporate entrepreneurship).
Like the metaphor of the three blind men feeling an elephant, this course combines different lenses on entrepreneurship: i) a scientific, more abstract lens, ii) a lens on entrepreneurship tools that entrepreneurs can use and iii) a lens on the practices of actual enterprises. Aggregating those lenses aims to demonstrate that entrepreneurship is more holistic than a cookbook of recipes.
Assessment Methods and Criteria
Valid 01.08.2020-31.07.2022:
Individual assignments 70%
Team assignments 30%
Applies in this implementation:
Didactic approach and organization
The course comprises a lecture module for BIZ, Open University and Non-BIZ students and an additional case module for BIZ and Open University Students (see separate document). The course will take place in myCourses and will be complemented by Zoom lectures. It contains individual and group work and individual and group assignments. The course will build on a variety of methods: front teaching (Zoom), video self-study, group work (including peer evaluation), development of MC-questions, and audience response system.
Process of the MC-Questions
Each student is asked to read the article Sarasvathy, S. D. 2001.
Causation and Effectuation: Toward a theoretical shift from economic
inevitability to entrepreneurial contingency. Academy of Management
Review, 26(2): 243-263 and to develop and upload three MC-questions in the “Assignments” section in MyCourses until05.11.2020 at 9:15 am.In the lecture on the 12.11.2020, 10 randomly chosen MC-Questions
will be discussed. Fur-thermore, the final exam will contain 3
MC-Questions of the total pool of suggested MC-questions.Video self-study:
The videos for self-study will be available in myCourses in the section “Materials” from the first lecture on. They are about the essential knowledge of entrepreneurship and innovation management. The corresponding slide deck is also available in myCourses in the section “Materials”. Consecutive watching of the videos is recommended. Students will have several opportunities to ask questions about the content of the videos. It is highly appreciated if students e-mail their questions to the lecturer two days before the lecture.
Group work (including peer evaluation):
For the group work, all students will have the same submission deadline and are required to read three scientific articles.
Step 1: Team formation
Students are asked to form groups of min. 3 and max. 5 students themselves and to indicate their team formation in the Group Choice Module in myCourses until 02.11.2020.
The groups will perform different tasks (see below for further details). They can connect with each other via myCourses and work on the tasks online or in face-to-face meetings.
Step 2: Development phase
Each group will be randomly assigned to one of three cohorts: Venture Opportunity, Business Model or Venture Funding. Depending on the assigned cohort, the groups are supposed to answer one of the three questions (details will be provided in the first lecture). Depending on the assigned task, each group will prepare an essay of 1000-2000 words + 5 PPT slides (excl. cover page and references) in which the essay is visualized.
The structure of these essays should be:
- 200-400 words explanation of the framework
- 200-400 words description of the impact venture’s operations
- 600-1200 words elaboration of the question
The 5 PPT slides (excl. cover page and references) should include min. 1 PPT Slide explanation of the framework and 1 PPT slide case description. Afterwards, each group uploads the essay and the PPT slides – if possible in 1 document – in a PDF format in MyCourses in the section Assignments”.
Upload format: "Group Name_Cohort_Case.PDF“, example: 1. Group_Venture Opportunity_ResQ.pdf.
The deadline for uploading the essay and presentation is: 14.11.2020 at 9:15 am.
Step 3: 1st Evaluation phase
After the 14.11.2020 at 9:15 am, the 1st evaluation round starts. In this round, each essay and presentation of one group from the development round is evaluated by one randomly assigned group of another cohort. The lecturer will send the evaluation excel file and the essay, presentation of the group you are supposed to evaluate to you.
Please go to the tab “Grading” in the same excel file. You will find a table with the following categories:
Essay: Structure/storyline
Essay: Appropriate focus
Essay: Value-added of the information provided
Essay: Transfer of the theoretical model to the case
Presenation: Visualization of the essay in the presentation
Please read the essay and the presentation of the assigned development group, define the expected achievements according to the five categories above (25 definitions in total) and grade the essay and the presentation of the development group according to your expected achievements. Afterwards, each group uploads their excel file in my-Courses with their group name: "Group Name“, example: “1.Group.xlsx” in the section “Assignments”. Please upload your completed excel-file in MyCourses until: 18.11.2020 at 9:15 am.
Step 4: 2nd Evaluation phase
After the 18.11.2020 at 9:15 am, 2nd evaluation round starts. In this round, the quality of the evaluations from the 1st evaluation round will be evaluated. The lecturer will send developed essay and PPT presentation from the “Development Round” and the evaluation excel of the “1st Evaluation Round” you are supposed to evaluate to you.
Please go to the tab “2nd Grading” in the same excel file. Please read the essay and the presentation of the development group that the lecturer has sent to you and review the criteria defined in the 1st evaluation (columns C-G). Please provide comments on this 1st evaluation in Column I and grade the 1st evaluation group in Column J.
Afterwards, each group uploads their excel file in MyCourses without any changes of the name of the excel file in the section “Assignments”. Please upload your completed excel-file in myCourses until: 24.11.2020 at 9:15 am.
The excel files will be sent to the development groups who can revise their presentations. The revised presentations will be presented in the lecture on the 26.11.2020 (in a 20 minutes presentation).
The final exam of the lecture module will be a one hour open book online exam in My-Courses of 33 MC questions. It can contain questions about everything that has been uploaded in myCourses.
Exam Grading:
50-59 points = 1
60-69 points = 2
70-79 points = 3
80-89 points = 4
90-100 points = 5 (best grade)
