Please note! Course description is confirmed for two academic years, which means that in general, e.g. Learning outcomes, assessment methods and key content stays unchanged. However, via course syllabus, it is possible to specify or change the course execution in each realization of the course, such as how the contact sessions are organized, assessment methods weighted or materials used.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

After the completion of the course, the students will be able to
• describe the principles and industrial practices of sustainable biomass utilization
• understand plants through their living functions
• characterize plant-based biomass in terms of chemical composition and microscopic structure and relate chemical composition to potential industrial uses
• communicate scientific findings in written and oral form across disciplines

CONTENT, ASSESSMENT AND WORKLOAD

Content
  • Valid 01.08.2020-31.07.2022:

Basis for sustainable use of biomass. Main physiological functions of plants and their anatomical and chemical features from macroscopic to microscopic and submicroscopic levels. Industrially relevant biomass sources and their fractionation and processing to material and chemical products.

  • Applies in this implementation:

The lectures consist of introductory lectures to plant biomass, their fractionation processes and products, and business cases from several companies. Students deepen their knowledge on these areas through group assignments on selected topics that they summarize in a written literature report and a seminar presentation. Additionally, students work in pairs in laboratory familiarizing with the basic microscopic techniques and chemical analysis of lignocellulosic biomass. For ARTS students, laboratory works deepening the behavior of biomass fractions replace the chemical analyses. Each pair summarizes there findings in a short report.

Assessment Methods and Criteria
  • Valid 01.08.2020-31.07.2022:

Working in laboratory. Laboratory and literature search reports. Seminar presentation.

Workload
  • Valid 01.08.2020-31.07.2022:

Contact teaching (lectures, laboratory works, seminar) 48 h, independent work (literature search, writing reports) 87 h; participation in laboratory works and seminar is compulsory.
