LEARNING OUTCOMES

The objective of the seminar is to develop discussion and debate regarding the diverse aspects of the new media (in art and design) and its role in society at the local national level as well as within a global and international context. Participants:

1. Present their doctoral research, conference presentations, and essays. 

2. Work with an opponent during the presentation that can focus on the current state of the candidate s work and which can include data gathering techniques, theory, methods, and envisioned conclusions.

The course is led by professor Lily Díaz-Kommonen. During the autumn semester of 2020, September, October and November seminar meetings will be held online. If the situation permits and following safety guidelines, we hope to possibly hold our December meeting in a physical location. This will be informed later during the seminar.

Seminar meetings start promptly at 16:30 and last until 19:30, with a 15 minutes break around 17:30. 

It is very important that presenting student/candidates provide the research assistant (Karl Ketamo) with the title and abstract of their presentation two weeks before the session. It is also important to inform the research assistant and seminar leader of your choice for presenter with enough time in advance.

Content
  • Valid 01.08.2020-31.07.2022:

    New Media Doctoral Seminar is a forum where the diversity of disciplines and interests that make up the postgraduate research community in the Media Lab are brought together for a discussion. The seminar meets 4 times per semester. Each session includes a presenter and an opponent who is also a guest speaker. The candidate's presentation is followed by a debate with the opponent. Participants in the seminar are encouraged to ask questions and debate.

    The themes vary in every session according to the background and the work of the presenters. Presentations about special topics by invited guests and speakers sometimes augment the sessions.

  • Applies in this implementation:

    The content of each session varies according to the topic(s) that are being researched by the students/candidates and their selected guest presenters.

    The seminar sessions can be used to present ongoing research activities as well as to discuss preliminary results. It is also possible to for example, devote a session of the seminar to a specific topic that might be interest to the community. For example, a seminar session could also be used to discuss new literature as well as the different processes involved in doing a literature search. Please discuss with the seminar leader if you have a topics that you would want to see discussed.



Assessment Methods and Criteria

    Attendance and active participation are required. Students are required to prepare their own presentations and actively participate in discussions and reviews.
