LEARNING OUTCOMES
The students become familiar with current experimental phenomena in the spatial, performing, mediated and visual arts as it impacts on scenography. The students learn to question their own preconceptions and existing performance conventions and traditions in a constructive and creative manner. The students learn to investigate, produce and develop new styles of expression and work methods. The students learn to apply their scenographic competencies in new fields.

The Experimental Scenography Workshops 2020-21 focus
on the phenomenon of ´peripheries´ through the means of artistic research
and approach the research conference as a place for exploratory art.On the course ´periphery´ is considered
as something spatial, aesthetic and material, as well as a philosophical,
societal and political phenomenon and concept related to various artistic and scientific
fields. In the beginning of the course the students set up an art and
research project related to the subject, set the research questions and define
their approach and methodologies tied to artistic work. The research will
be carried out individually or in small groups. The aim of the research is
to unravel and understand the multidimensionality of peripheries and
make them visible and experiential through artistic work.The students’ research processes and/or results will
be displayed as part of an international art and research event that will take
place in the surroundings of Otaniemi campus either in week 3, 7, 10 or 14. The event will be
organized as part of the ending year events (PERIPHERIES IN PARALLAX:
Conference + Art Event + Hybrids) of the Floating Peripheries –
Mediating the Sense of Place research project (2017–2021) by the
department of Film, Television and Scenography. Along with making their
art and research project, the students take part in designing and realising the
conference environment (it may be partly or fully physical, or partly or fully virtual).
Their task is to design the “spatial and functional body” that the event requires,
considering its various needs. It forms a relation to the concept of periphery/peripherality and
contain its own argument about the phenomenon.The students take part in the artistic research
conference and the art research event at least 26.2 and 9.4.NOTE. Because of the pandemic, we proceed in a
situation-specific way: we take the current situation and the spaces/sites/conditions
it creates both as a delineation, as well as an opportunity to experiment with
something completely new and exceptional. The pandemic has sparked a desire to
explore how art and artistic research live and materialize at different
interfaces and situations between the physical and the virtual. In other words:
the spatial and temporal frameworks of the course and event (s) will be shaped
in relation to the prevailing circumstances and guidelines.The student will learn to manage the different stages
of a research process within the framework of artistic research. They will
learn to set up a research question and/or determine the starting points for
their project. The student will learn to choose the suitable working methods as
well as an artistic and/or theoretical framework for their project. They will
learn to develop new perspectives to the phenomenon they are researching
through artistic work, and bring the different phases of their research
process into a visible and shareable form.The student will learn to understand the different
phases of organizing an international conference and an art research event, and
to act in a responsible role in designing and coordinating the practical
arrangements and content of the event.The student will learn to develop their own idea of
the broad artistic and theoretical material and see different kinds of
relations and connections between the works and presentations presented at the
conference and the art and research event.
