LEARNING OUTCOMES
After this course student is familiar with different asphalt mixture types, raw materials, production methods and mechanical performance of mixtures. Student can select appropriate mixture type and raw materials based on performance requirements. Student can describe how material properties affect pavement performance: durability and deterioration. Student is familiar with asphalt construction techniques and he/she knows the basic principles of production quality control and quality assurance. Student can perform volumetric mix design.

Content

Consideration of major types of bituminous materials - bitumen, cutback and fluxed bitumen and emulsions and different mixture types. Influence of chemical composition upon physical properties. Desirable aggregate characteristics for bituminous mixtures. Construction techniques including hot and warm mixing. Current practices for determining optimum asphalt content. Recycling and reuse of bituminous materials. Forensic evaluation of failed pavements.

Laboratory exercises require reading of the AASHTO and CEN standard of MSCR procedure, and a comparative analysis of those.
During the exercises we will be using Asfalttinormit 2017, which are in Finnish. English speaking users will be provided an English version of the book, which is unfortunately partially outdated (2000). The material is based on CEN norms and harmonized standards. English speaking users will be advised how to proceed with those documents.
