LEARNING OUTCOMES
After completing the course, students can describe and assess how productive activities contribute to the evolution and management of the landscape and integrate the acquired knowledge in sustainable plans or proposals. In addition, the course contributes to the acquisition of competences for independent research on the topic and for further learning.

The studio has an applied character and covers the following parts:
- Analysis of the environmental, social and economic potentials and problems arising from the development of some productive activities in a given landscape.
- Definition of strategies to increase the environmental, social and economic sustainability of the landscape by improving or adjusting its productive activities.
- Development of a landscape plan and/or pilot projects.
- Use of specific methods and tools to develop the above mentioned objectives for a particular productive activity (agriculture, forestry, tourism, energy production, industry, transport, etc.) or for a combination of them.
- Reflection on the global and local contribution of landscape architecture for the proposed topic.

Studio focuses on the Baltic Sea and the productive processes and activities that are dependent or based on the marine environment and landscape. The sea has been used in many ways throughout the history and the importance of the sea is growing even more in today’s society.
The nature of the Baltic Sea is changing mainly due to long-term wastewater load and nutrient loss from agriculture, as well as the ongoing warming of the sea temperature. The Baltic Sea has been even titled as one of the most polluted seas in the world. The changes in the marine environment affect how the sea is used and productive activities must adapt and reconcile with the state of the marine ecosystems. There is an urgent need for more sustainable and diverse use of the sea, at the same time as the well-being of the sea must be taken care of.
During the studio students will deepen their understanding of the Baltic Sea landscape, the state of the marine ecosystems and how different productive activities contribute the unique and fragile marine environment. The aim is to produce strategies and plans for future sustainable and resilient use of the marine environment especially focusing on the Finnish sea area. Topics that will be considered during the course include, for instance, energy and food production, tourism, transport, landfills and other natural resources and benefits provided by the sea. Is the Baltic Sea lost ecosystem or can we find a way towards a sustainable future of the marine exploitation?
Assessment Methods and Criteria

The assessment methods of the course (e.g. assignments) will promote a combined exploration of theoretical concepts and their practical application. Further information given on MyCourses

The course will be graded in scale 0- 5.
The assignments will have the following weight in the final grade:
Analysis (group assignment) (20%)
Course assignment (50%)
Reflection of personal work (week assignments) (15%)
Opponency (10%)
Participation and activeness during the contact teaching (5%)
The evaluation will be done by the responsible teachers with the possible help of external experts.
Formative assessment: mid-reviews and open discussions with peers and teacher
Summative review: Mainly in the final review
Final assessment: by teacher with the possible collaboration of invited experts. The assessment will be based on the level of achievement of the intended learning outcomes, the level of understanding of the course contents and the capacity to generate consistent, innovative and well-presented proposals. In addition, the critical, effective and constructive participation in the discussions of the course will be positively valued.
The delay of submitted course work (assignments, etc.) affects its assessment:
If the work is delayed but submitted by 16.1.2021, the grade is lowered with one point (i.e. 3 becomes 2),
If the work is delayed but submitted by 8.2.2021 (2. jälkipalautuspäivä), the grade is lowered with two points. (i.e. 3 becomes 1)
In the end of the course the instructor may also accept unsubmitted work which is almost accomplished, but the unfinishedness of the work is taken into consideration in the grading.
