Please note! Course description is confirmed for two academic years, which means that in general, e.g. Learning outcomes, assessment methods and key content stays unchanged. However, via course syllabus, it is possible to specify or change the course execution in each realization of the course, such as how the contact sessions are organized, assessment methods weighted or materials used.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

After completing the course students know the basics of strategic green area planning. They are able to identify and integrate in planning the key spaces and functions of urban green infrastructures, their associated ecosystem services as well as the basic conditions for their sustainable management. In addition, the course contributes to the acquisition of competences for independent research on the topic and for further learning.

CONTENT, ASSESSMENT AND WORKLOAD

Content
  • Valid 01.08.2020-31.07.2022:

Firstly, the course provides a general knowledge of the key concepts in Green Urban Planning. Secondly, the course adds contemporary concepts in Green Urban Planning and explores their interconnections (Green Infrastructures, Ecosystem services, Urban metabolisms, Nature based solutions, etc.). Thirdly, the course integrates the acquired knowledge in the analysis, diagnosis and improvement of cities and specific urban areas.

  • Applies in this implementation:

    Please note!

The extent of the course is either 7 or 5 credits.

7 cr for students of Landscape Architecture

5 cr for students of other disciplines

The definition of multifunctional green-blue infrastructures and the increase of the associated ecosystem services in urban areas will be the central objectives of this course.

The course will study environmental, ecological and social functions of green areas and show how the scales and contexts can contribute to the creation of more sustainable cities.

In order to apply the acquired knowledge, the course will include a set of case studies in different neighborhoods of Helsinki. By discovering the layers of urban green, students will study how to add environmental education perspectives to the green areas and how they could improve residents´ relationship with nature.

Assessment Methods and Criteria
  • Valid 01.08.2020-31.07.2022:

The assessment methods of the course (e.g. assignments) will promote a combined exploration of theoretical concepts and their practical application. Further information given on MyCourses.

  • Applies in this implementation:

The course will be graded in scale 0- 5.

The assignments will have the following weight in the final grade:

    • Credits75
      Assignments 1-220 %28 %
      Assignments 3-430 %42 %
      Assignment 545 %23 %
      Assignment 65 %7 %

The assessment will be based in the consistent use of the concepts introduced in each assignment and in the generation of complete, innovative and well-presented solutions for the proposed tasks. The assessment of the final assignment will also consider the quality of the final deliverables (graphic, narrative and conceptual). The final grade will also consider the evolution of the studentduring the whole course; her/his level of involvement and his/her capacity to generate relevant discussions and to provide constructive feedback to peers.

Students will be guided by tutors and peers during the tutoring sessions and mid-reviews to improve their performance in each assignment. Due to the continuous character of the course, students will be able to improve their work in the following assignments and in the final one.

The final review will support the development of self and peer assessment skills.

The assessment of the level of achievement of the general and specific learning outcomes, the process and the clarity of chosen solutions and plans.

The delay of submitted course work (assignments, etc.) affects its assessment:

If the work is delayed but submitted by the 16.1.2021 (1. jälkipalautuspäivä), the grade is lowered with one grade (i.e. 3 becomes 2). If the work is delayed but submitted by 8.2.2021 (2. jälkipalautuspäivä), the grade is lowered with two grades. (i.e. 3 becomes 1).

In the end of the course the instructor may also accept unsubmitted work which is almost accomplished, but the unfinishedness of the work is taken into consideration in the grading and the earned credits.

Workload
  • Valid 01.08.2020-31.07.2022:

Tutored studies 45 hrs (lectures, seminars, reviews), independent study 140 hrs (readings, research and planning assignments), in total 185 hrs.

  • Applies in this implementation:
