Please note! Course description is confirmed for two academic years, which means that in general, e.g. Learning outcomes, assessment methods and key content stays unchanged. However, via course syllabus, it is possible to specify or change the course execution in each realization of the course, such as how the contact sessions are organized, assessment methods weighted or materials used.
LEARNING OUTCOMES
The aim is to introduce the student to winter navigation system in the Baltic Sea and basic principles for ship power requirements and hull ice-strengthening. After the course, students understand the definition of various ice conditions and their effects on the ship design, hull shape, power requirements, navigation in ice and safety of ships. Power requirements needs a comprehensive knowledge of the various methods to calculate the ship resistance in varying ice conditions such as level ice, ridged ice and ice channels. For the hull design, most important is to know how to calculate the ice induced loads on the hull.

Assessment Methods and Criteria
Valid 01.08.2020-31.07.2022:
The assessment will consist of weekly exercises, and the exam. Weekly exercises are related to the topics presented in the lectures and they will give the students skills to conduct the important ship design related tasks. In addtion, iB excursion is possible, but most prpobably only part of the students will get allowannce and the criteria will be the success of the course progress
Applies in this implementation:
•The extent of the course is 5 credit ( in
total about 125 hours work) consisting of 18 hours lectures, 3 exercises in
total workload of 48 hours, excursion to ship simulator, and the rest
is getting familiar with the lecture notes preparing for examine.•Own ship can be used in the exercises•The course can be passed by examine and
by conducting at least 50 % of the exercises. Well done exercises can give 6
extra points in
the examine
Workload
Valid 01.08.2020-31.07.2022:
On the final grade exam 100% contribution, in addition there is a minimum amount of weekly exercises (50%) the students have to conduct to get the permission for the exam and when all exam done properly, max 6 points added to the eaxm points
Lectures: 3 h/week, 54 hours in total
Exercises: 1 h/week, 48 hours in total
Preparing for the exam: 24 hours
