CONTENT, ASSESSMENT AND WORKLOAD
Content
Valid 01.08.2020-31.07.2022:
During the course we will explore through (possibly) previously unfamiliar medium or method the interconnections between thinking conceptually and material reality. The goal is to demonstrate the process of thinking through mediums, materiality and tools we are working with. Each year there is one specific topic we are working with, these vary from bronze casting to vhs-editing, or analog photography to drawing with optical (historical) devices.
Applies in this implementation:
As this is practise based course where we learn by doing I wanted to find a solution that can happen in live (not online) and with materials that are non-digital. I ended up with the solution to take this year as a concept “En plen air”, act of painting outdoors.
We look at the phenomena not as “expressing ourselves through the landscape painting” but to study the concept and technological change that made it possible to move outside of the ateljé to paint in situ. This had huge impact on the practice of painters when the process of working became situational, changing light and life around was in complete new interaction with the work, that was to be also the object of an art work and not only a sketch.
As not many of us are not trained as painters this will be a journey also to work with more or less unfamiliar “technology”, as brushes and paints and liquids used are made for certain purpose to function with human body. We will dig into the concept by facing the limitations and opportunities of this medium/technology through “hands on” practice. Another aspect that is essential in this method of working is the core questions of perception and interpretation, temporality and structure of an image. And as last but not least, painting as an open space between the author and the world around. We can think act of photographing as shooting camera as weapon but painting canavas as some kind of agora, space in between us.
The course includes practical work outside, and seminar sessions and lectures via Zoom. Materials are provided.
