INDISCIPLINARY INTERVENTIONS
HIETSU WORKSHOP
10–18 September 2020
INDISCIPLINARY INTERVENTIONS HIETSU WORKSHOP combines artistic practice and theoretical thinking, inspired by ideas of equality/ emancipation/ collective intelligence in the oeuvre of Jacques Rancière. Art practice is informed by theoretical thinking, while theory is approached as exploratory and speculative material.
The aim of HIETSU WORKSHOP is to develop artistic works and site-specific interventions in HIETSU PAVILION and its surroundings in experimental relation to the themes discussed and worked with in the Spring part, using the archives from the Spring course as reference material in the group work.
HIETSU WORKSHOP experiments with and enables constellations of speculative spaces and temporalities connected to the physical location of Hietsu Pavilion and/or Hietaniemi beach area surrounding it.
HIETSU PAVILION (http://www.hietsunpaviljonki.fi/intro) is the home-base for the workshop for eight days and nights (excluding weekend). The workshop runs both virtually (zoom meets etc.) and on-site (in safe small groups = the groups are free to choose their working flow and -site themselves). It is possible to participate also from remote location.
(More detailed info about the practices and practicalities will be given once you have enrolled/registered/confirmed your participation by responding to this email!)
A core component featuring the workshop is NIGHT SCHOOL hosted by Tanja Kiiveri (visual artist and lecturer in KuvA) with visitors. It starts at the dawn of sunset on weeknights (see SCHEDULE). In the frame of NIGHT SCHOOL both the temporal and physical setting of the pavilion and Hietaniemi beach has a unique role. The exceptional temporal frame is to be considered as part of the working process.
The groups choose their mode and site of working: they can work on the pavilion and its surroundings, or equally well so that part of the group works remotely (via Zoom and other mediums). It is recommended that at least part of the group members connect to the physical site. A group check/formation will be made on the INTRO DAY on Thursday 10 Sept, 14:00-16:00 / 4-6PM Helsinki time.
HIETSU WORKSHOP ends with a 1-day HIETSU WORKSHOP FINALE on Friday 18 September (app.15:00-22:00, time will be confirmed!).
The 1-day symposium is an open event where the participants share their works and processes realized during the workshop. The program is arranged according to the nature + form of the works and projects by the groups, and in careful consideration of ‘only small groups present at the same time’.
* * *
HIETSU WORKSHOP follows the Interdisciplinary Interventions: An Introduction to Jacques Rancière’s thinking on Art and Politics lecture series held in Spring 2020. The workshop continues to seek –by way of site-specific and temporary formations, artworks and dimensional compositions– ways that “challenge the pre-established ways to distribute the sensible, to create new unheard ways to feel, see and think, and to create something new which has been before judged impossible”.
