Please note! Course description is confirmed for two academic years, which means that in general, e.g. Learning outcomes, assessment methods and key content stays unchanged. However, via course syllabus, it is possible to specify or change the course execution in each realization of the course, such as how the contact sessions are organized, assessment methods weighted or materials used.
LEARNING OUTCOMES
After completing the course students:
know different coating techniques and methods used to coat paper, board and wood
understand main interactions between the substrate and coating materials and suspensions
know the raw materials used in various coatings
understand the principles in designing and selecting the coating formulations for different end uses

CONTENT, ASSESSMENT AND WORKLOAD
Content
Valid 01.08.2020-31.07.2022:
This course covers different coating technologies and techniques used in industrial applications for fibre-based product portfolios. These products are mostly based on wood, paper and board and their converted applications.
The viewpoint on these issues is coming from the end use requirements set to products. The functional requirements are discussed and then how to introduce the required functionality to these products by coating them.
Key question in this course is "how coating affects the product properties?". Surface chemistry and topography of surfaces play an important role. Interactions between the substrate surface and coating formulations are discussed.
Different coating materials, coating techniques, methods and machinery are introduced.
Part of learning takes places in laboraoratory rehearsals. There we prepare experimental planning with selected and justified factors and test their responses to the key product properties. Results are reflected and discussed against theoretical framework.
There is a small end exam to assess the level of individual knowledge on issues related to coating.
