LEARNING OUTCOMES
Students who successfully complete the 2ECTS version of the course should be able to:
- Demonstrate familiarity with a variety of examples across a broad continuum of research through art and design practices including artistic research, practice-led and -based research approaches
- Demonstrate an ability to connect and critically discuss across the examples including some common issues pertinent to all forms of research
- Critically articulate their understanding of the relation of artistic research to conventional research paradigms
Students who successfully complete the 4ECTS version of the course should also be able to:
- Articulate a critical comprehension of more specific approaches (including artistic and -based research, practice-led and -based research) between theory and art and design practices
- Demonstrate an ability to motivate, integrate and apply this comprehension to their own research (or research plan).

Content

The course introduces a variety of approaches, methodologies, issues and concerns in research through practice . Here, research through practice refers to a broad continuum of artistic research approaches, arts-based, practice-led and -based research approaches, and constructive design research approaches, relevant across practices in Aalto ARTS. The course introduces researchers and their research work from Aalto and elsewhere, including and increasing dialogue with and among these researchers.
Assessment Methods and Criteria

- Lectures, Discussions, Reading assignments. The 4ECTS version of the course also includes reading circle and mapping exercises.
- Participation in contact teaching sessions (including 85% attendance)
- Completion of preparation and reflection work (reading and writing).

- Individual/group work: 22hThe 2ECTS version of the course is a broad introduction to the topic. The 4ECTS version of the course focuses on deepening and applying this through pedagogical activities that guide students to integrate such perspectives within their own research work.
