LEARNING OUTCOMES

On a successful completion of this workshop, students:

- know history and present of documentary photography and are able to contextualize their own work into the field

- are able to critically assess the historical and contemporary practices and structures of documentary photography

- can critically analyse and present their own and other photographers' work

- can design, present, and execute an independent documentary photography project

- can analyse and edit documentary image materials

CONTENT, ASSESSMENT AND WORKLOAD

Content

    On the course, we discuss the theoretical basis and professional practices of documentary photography. Students develop, edit, and present their own projects. Visiting lecturers open up their work processes. We also look at different documentary approaches and vantage points and the various forms of photographer's work in the changing fields of media and contemporary art.

Assessment Methods and Criteria

    Course evaluation: pass/fail. Passing the course requires at least 80% active participation in lectures and other classroom teaching/groupwork, as well as producing an own documentary project. 

Workload
  • valid for whole curriculum period:

    The course consists of lectures, classroom teaching and working on a personal documentary photography project. The course comprises of course meetings (ca. 35 hours) and individual work including feedback (altogether 162 hours = 6 ECTS).
