Please note! Course description is confirmed for two academic years, which means that in general, e.g. Learning outcomes, assessment methods and key content stays unchanged. However, via course syllabus, it is possible to specify or change the course execution in each realization of the course, such as how the contact sessions are organized, assessment methods weighted or materials used.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

Wearable techonology and functional wear course invites students from all around Aalto University to explore tactile ways of interacting with technology through soft materials and innovate new functional wear solutions. The course encourages students to focus on open-minded concept development in functional wear or wearable design through experimental material exploration.

After the course, students are able to conduct an ideation process and concept generation leading towards the creation of wearable prototypes or functional wear prototypes. Students learn the basic skills to implement textile based prototypes with electronic functionality and to create simple algorithms. They also learn functional clothing materials and details as well as manufacturing techniques and policies.

CONTENT, ASSESSMENT AND WORKLOAD

Content
  • valid for whole curriculum period:

First part of the course consists of initial learning period with lectures, hands-on work and background research leading to ideation. After the first part students can choose either functional wear or wearable technology prototyping path. The second part is the concept creation where the students will create a design concept based on the first part focusing on user needs.  Students who are choosing wearable prototyping will work in multidisciplinary teams. Students working with functional wear can work individually or in pairs.

Students will learn the basics of how textile techniques can be applied in smart textile development in the context of prototyping wearables and experimental interactive textiles.

Functional wear part covers topics as ergonomics, and technical and performance requirements in different fields. Students will deepen their design expertise in the field of functional clothing and familiarize with the latest material development.

Assessment Methods and Criteria
  • valid for whole curriculum period:

80% attendance and completed assignments and final project. Attendance in the introduction is mandatory.

The work will be evaluated by the following criteria: Activity during the course, concept and originality, use of technology, functionality

Workload
  • valid for whole curriculum period:

    270 h
