valid for whole curriculum period:
We will work on a project formed together with students outside of university campus. We will explore new potentials in our environment for artistic practice to take place. The end result of the course might be exhibition, event(s) or some other materialization in collaboration with actor outside of the university.

Experiments in Situation and Contextuality
Water, space, place
19.4. – 18.5.2022 on Wednesday and Thursday at 9.15 – 17.00
In this course we are working on the question of water as space in urban area. Helsinki metropolitan area is surrounded by water and it is part of daily “living practices”.
The aim of this course is to dive in, literally or metaphorically, into the various dimensions of the water and human body, urban environment and situational artistic practice. The “water space” is something very different from being on land surrounded by air. Water space might be dangerous for human beings but also huge comfort and temporal break from gravity, it gives us visual pleasure and carries heavy weight of representations.
This course will focus on Maarinlahti area (behind Otakaari 7, Aalto Studios buildings). We are exploring the area from water and from land and the goal is to work on an art piece that takes place in that very situation, concretely and/or conceptually. Sea as an environment is highly sensitive and therefore questions as causation of an act and lifespan and/or afterlife of an artwork are essential.
Emphasizes of the course is on hands on working but we will also have lectures and talks by visitors (e.g. from the field of urban studies and – geography)
We will have kayaks and wetsuits for those who want to access the water, but working can as well happen on land and on more imaginary level.
All inputs and inserts, and reading lists from you are very welcome since I know that some of you are working on the topic of water!
