Please note! Course description is confirmed for two academic years, which means that in general, e.g. Learning outcomes, assessment methods and key content stays unchanged. However, via course syllabus, it is possible to specify or change the course execution in each realization of the course, such as how the contact sessions are organized, assessment methods weighted or materials used.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The course follows the design of an experimental building from first sketches to a finished and constructed design. This process introduces them to essential aspects of design and construction using wood products and materials as well as methods of pre-fabfication, transport and assembly.

CONTENT, ASSESSMENT AND WORKLOAD

Content
  • valid for whole curriculum period:

This experimental building studio looks in depth at the special characteristics of wooden building and allows students to follow the entire process of design and construction. The group works together develop an idea into a detailed design including plans for use, permits, fabrication, construction, transport and assembly on site.

In the fall, students develop individual proposals for a building project. In the spring, they work as a group to develop a feasible design for construction. Finally, the group executes the project in the workshop and the site as a full-scale structure.

Assessment Methods and Criteria
  • valid for whole curriculum period:

Students are evaluated on their skills in design as well as their ability to work together to design and develop a group project. The primary assessment is based on the detailed evaluation of the completed project.

Workload
  • valid for whole curriculum period:

The course meets once weekly during the fall and twice weekly during the spring.

Sessions are organized around tutoring, presentations, site visits and group meetings as necessary.

243hrs - (fall term) individual design development of proposals for an experimental building

405hrs - (spring term) development and construction of group project
