LEARNING OUTCOMES
After the course you will know classification, heat treatment, and properties of engineering metals and alloys. You will know the metallurgical phenomena in the main heat treatment and processing methods. You are able to carry out basic metallurgical characterization and indentify microstructures. You are able to relate microstructure to performance.

CONTENT, ASSESSMENT AND WORKLOAD
Content
valid for whole curriculum period:
The course introduces the most important ferrous and non-ferrous alloys used in mechanical engineering. The emphasis is in applications in transport, energy, and process industry. The course teaches how the performance and properties are related to alloying and microstructure, and how the microstructure is tailored with different heat treatment methods. Also, the effect of service environment and temperature are taken into account. Theory is connected to practice in assignments, in which the students will study e.g. hardenability of steels and precipitation hardening of aluminium alloys, and characterize microstructures using optical microscopy and hardness testing.
Assessment Methods and Criteria
