Laughter in the Dark: 1970s Finnish Cinema Between Experiments and Populism (2 ECTS)
The 1970s are commonly considered something akin to a blank space in Finnish film history: In 1974, production sank to the all-time low of a mere two locally produced releases. In some ways this is not surprising: The studio system and its securities was gone, while film subsidizing was not truly thought through and structured. Thus, every film was in some ways an adventure. Looked at more carefully, the 1970s reveal themselves as a period of wild experimentation as well as a never before nor since closeness of high and low cinematic idioms – art, avant-garde and trash overlapped and cross-pollinated each other in ever surprising ways. In this course, we'll watch prime examples for the experimental as well as the populist spirit of the era, with classics from axioms like Rauni Mollberg meeting almost unseen works by mavericks lost to the winds of time like Pekka Hyytiäinen. Watching and discussing these, we'll find out how porous, permeable the borders between genres and tastes can be....

All films will be screened on 35 mm film.

There is an hour-long lunch break at around noon. Daily schedules depend on the length of films, lectures and discussions.
Please be on time in the mornings as the lecture starts at 9 am sharp!
