Content

    The course aims to help you to function effectively in the academic context by focusing on three essential academic skills: academic writing, giving clear and convincing scholarly presentations, and having a strong understanding of the principles and practices of research ethics at Aalto University. Throughout the course, you will also learn how to give and receive constructive feedback on academic work.

    In the writing part, we will focus on academic writing skills such as effective argumentation and creating a research space by identifying the background, motivation and focus of your research.  

    In the presentations part, you will be able to develop yourself as a presenter. You will give several presentations during the course, and through practice learn how to deliver convincing, coherent, and engaging research talks, including job talks.

    2000-word (max.) essay about “Why Academic Writing Is So Hard”             Due May 15

    Presentation assignments (P1-P4):

    Assignment P1: 1-min pitch about your research, version 1                          Due May 11

    Assignment P2: 1-min pitch about your research, version 2                          Due May 16

    Assignment P3: Conference presentation version 1                                       Due May 23

    Assignment P4: Conference presentation version 2                                       Due May 30 / June 1

     

    All assignments must be completed to pass the course. Late assignments are not accepted.

    All the assignments are assessed on a pass/fail scale.
