LEARNING OUTCOMES

After completing the course, the student

1. understands the principles of scientific work and the academic use of such work. This includes familiarity with:

- the basic principles of scientific argumentation.

- the difference between theoretical and empirical work.

- the basics of academic citation (including when citation is needed).

2. Can search for and use academic knowledge critically, and has tools for:

- how to search articles in databases. - how to quickly find out the big picture of a research topic.
- how to read scientific articles efficiently.

- how to judge the quality and relevance of both published work and unpublished working papers.

3. Is familiar with central features of academic writing, with a specific focus on writing in Economics, including:

- knowledge of the standard components of and structure of scientific papers in Economics.
- familiarity with basic tools for critically reviewing the literature.
- enhanced knowledge of grammatical and stylistic aspects required in academic writing.
