Reinventing Gender: The Year 24 Group and Its Influence on Japanese Cinema
During the first half of the 1970s, a group of young female artists started to revolutionize the world of Japanese comic books by writing and drawing stories that challenged literally every conventional gender notion – inside the traditionally relatively conservative world of shōjo manga (= girls comics)! Hagio Moto, Takemiya Keiko, Ōshima Yumiko, Ikeda Riyoko and about a dozen more introduced gay and lesbian themes in their stories, created androgynous and trans characters, turned cross-dressing from a novelty into a rule, etc. Animation as well as live action cinema immediately picked up on these very post-68 changes by adapting these manga but also developing their own takes on these themes and motives. A course filled with surprises and discoveries.

Evaluation on a scale of 0-5, based primarily on the essay or other individual assignment approved by the teacher in charge.
Workload

Contact teaching: Screenings, lectures, discussions (21hours) Independent work: essay or other individual assignment approved by the teacher in charge 33 hours).
At least 80% participation in face-to-face teaching is mandatory to complete the course. If, due to absences, the student does not achieve the learning outcomes defined in the course description, the remaining 20% may have to be compensated as determined by the responsible teachers of the course.
All absences must be reported to the teachers in charge. The responsible teachers of the course will specify the necessary compensating assignments.Study methods changed by decision of Academic Committee for Arts, Design and Architecture on 1st of February 2023.
