The Lover's Attitude: The Particular Poetics of Amateur Filmmaking
Habitually, film history deals exclusively with industrially produced movies (pace experimental cinema), which means that, paradoxically, the greatest number of moving image works remain outside its field of vision: that of films made by amateurs. And no wonder, for this is a world apart, usually private, open only to a choice few and of interest to even less (who hasn't fallen asleep watching a holiday video?). Somewhere in the middle between the professional filmmaking we learn here at Aalto and the private citizen with a camera lies the focus of this course: Fiction films by amateurs; in some cases this means truly personal creations made for no other purpose than that of entertaining the nearest and dearest; in others cases, though, the makers did aim for bigger audiences which saw to wide releases of their labors of love eg. via Youtube. In this course, we'll watch animations by a retired machine fitter, martial arts movies by a peasant, fan films by a father & son team of superhero films, and many other creations that sport a questioning, bemused, cheeky or simply loving attitude towards the standards of cinema!
