LEARNING OUTCOMES

The studio introduces advanced skills, concepts and approaches essential to understanding and engaging with contemporary challenges in architecture and urban design. Organized in 6-7 parallel streams of exploration, each stream is aiming at a common set of learning outcomes that enable students to

1. Research, analyse and synthesise contextual knowledge.

2. Apply fundamental design principles and adapt them to sustainable design response.

3. Work productively in small design teams by enhancing inter-personal skills, verbal communication skills and critical thinking.

4. Communicate design intentions and concepts according to disciplinary conventions.

5. Explore creative processes and idea generation and demonstrate critical evaluation of these processes in their design work.

6. Appraise how design can impact, interact with, and improve environments.

CONTENT, ASSESSMENT AND WORKLOAD

Content

    The studio is organized in 6-7 parallel streams of exploration. These explorations are related to varying contemporary issues in architecture. The latest list of topics is available in the syllabus together with a description of the content of each stream and the specific learning outcomes.

    Design assignment: A concept for a rooftop extension construction with a frame that allows

    1.Modification of the spaces for different uses

    2.Update of the technical installations

    A study of resources used in wood construction:

    1.where does the material come from
    2.how it is processed
    3.what happens to the components used if the building is not needed anymore


    Studio components:

    1. Analyses / inventories
    2. Models
    3. Evaluation of alternative design options
    4. Diagrams
    -assembly and disassembly,
    -different uses of spaces,
    -amount of materials needed, resourcing…
    5. Detailed building design

    Way of working:

    -Teamwork
    -Physical model making + 3D modelling
    -Tutoring + discussion
    -Presentations + reviews

    2. Understanding of the main principles and elements of a detailed design of a wooden building
    3. Understanding the environmental impact of architectural design

    2. Ability to analyze information and apply it creatively into design
    3. Resourceful approach and solutions that address the studio design questions

Workload

    Workload:

    -12 credit points
    -324 hours (includes reflection)
    -workload approximately 23 hours per week / student  

    The studio will be implemented in teams of 3-5 students: 
    workload approximately 69 – 115 hours per group
