LEARNING OUTCOMES

In today's world, the complex interplay of politics, technology, and businesses is undeniable. How do the dynamics of power shape the business and
technological realms? In a landscape where these forces converge, comprehending political organizations and decision making is valuable, whether you pursue a public or private career.
The course provides tools to evaluate key decision making processes and practices, and encourages critical thinking and debate. The course draws from
several disciplines such as political science, sustainability studies, organizational studies, and legal research and education.

CONTENT, ASSESSMENT AND WORKLOAD

Content

    Themes covered:
    - Introduction to the key concepts of political theory
    - Democracy and national parliaments
    - Public political speaking (a visit to the Parliament, optional)
    - Ministries and the legislative drafting process
    - The role the EU and its legislative procedures
    - Lobbying and agenda setting
    The course follows principles of a safer space. We treat other people with respect and appreciate their contributions. Our focus is on providing
    constructive feedback and being prepared to engage in respectful dialogue. During discussions, we aim to ensure that everyone is heard and able to
    participate.

Assessment Methods and Criteria

  • valid for whole curriculum period:

    Attending the lectures and discussions (at least 80% unless otherwise agreed), completing reflection essays (reading and writing) and a final essay.

Workload

  • valid for whole curriculum period:

    Lectures, discussion of the reading materials and the lecture in small groups, discussions among the whole group, and homework reflection essays and a final essay.

    1) Students of the major Digital Ethics, Society and Policy in the Master’s Programme in Information Networks
    2) Other students of the Master’s Programme in Information Networks and of the Master’s Programme in Industrial Engineering and Management
    3) Students minoring in Information Networks or Industrial Engineering and Management
    4) Other Aalto Master’s Programme students
    Bachelor students can be admitted if space remains.
