LEARNING OUTCOMES
The course introduces how the first principles of mechanics are applied to the ship's structural design. After the course, the student knows 1) the function of ship structure, 2) ship construction method, 3) structural design principles, 4) strength analysis of ship hull, and 5) limit state analysis in ship structural design.

CONTENT, ASSESSMENT AND WORKLOAD
Content
valid for whole curriculum period:
General design principles; Material selection and production; Loads on marine structures; Analysis of stress and deflection of hull girder and substructures; Load-carrying capability and structural performance; Reliability.
Assessment Methods and Criteria
valid for whole curriculum period:
The course applies a learning concept in which the teaching events are aligned with students' structural design work. This work is composed systematically with the help of weekly assignments. A weekly learning cycle includes personal pre-assignment, interactive lecture, question hour, and assignment work. The weekly assignments submitted every two or three weeks composed the project work at the end of the course. The assignment and project work will be done by a 2- or 3-person group. Pre-assignments and final exams measure personal learning. The course grade is based on personal work (Pre-assignments 15%, Final exam 40%) and group-based work (Weekly assignments 30%, Final project report 15%).
Workload
valid for whole curriculum period:
Lectures: 24h
Workshop: 12h
Home assignments: 50h
Studying materials: 40h
Preparing for exams: 10h
