LEARNING OUTCOMES

On successful completion of the course, the student will be able to
—analyse existing typefaces from a perspective informed by both theory as well technical knowledge of type design
—select and articulate appropriate conceptual and technological approaches which are in line with their aesthetic and pragmatic intentions
—craft consistent sets of letterforms with contemporary digital software
—present their work in imaginative, individual, and innovative ways

CONTENT, ASSESSMENT AND WORKLOAD

Content

    The course aims to break down the rigid distinction between makers and users of typefaces (i.e. between specialist type designers vs. more generalist graphic designers), and instead works towards positioning type design as one among many forms of drawing. During the course, participating students will design one or several typefaces, which will be compiled into a jointly designed type specimen, which will function as the final outcome of the course.
