This course is an introduction to diverse approaches to the notion of narrative, especially in the context of design and visual communication. The course consists of lectures and discussions by designers, artists, writers, and researchers who introduce examples of narratives which work over multiple modes of communication. How does our relationship to narrative give form to the way we understand and see the world? What areas are inaccessible to stereotypical conceptions of narrative? What kinds of stories could we be telling now and in the future? In addition to these questions, the course includes critical discussion of visual representation, transmediality, and the ubiquitous and complex role of narratives in contemporary society.
