LEARNING OUTCOMES

Students will be able to create a film exercise combining documentary and fiction filmmaking methods.

Students will be able to experiment with both fiction and documentary methods that might include observation, improvisation, creative non-fiction writing, staging or performance.

Students will be able situate historically works that mix documentary and fiction filmmaking approaches.

CONTENT, ASSESSMENT AND WORKLOAD

Content

    The docufiction workshop will explore filmmaking approaches that call into question the traditional categories of fiction and documentary: hybrid films, documentary re-enactments, improvisational fictions, narrative provocations, performative documentaries, etc. In the docufiction course the students will gain hands-on experience and theoretical knowledge in developing and directing hybrid works, exploring its narrative, formal and aesthetic possibilities and creating synergies between fiction and documentary filmmakers.  

Assessment Methods and Criteria

    Active participation, lectures, workshop work and the completion of course assignments.  

    Teaching methods will be based on hands-on creative exercises, lectures, film screenings, discussions and the development of a docufiction film exercise.

Workload
  • valid for whole curriculum period:

    At least 80% participation in face-to-face teaching is mandatory to complete the course. If, due to absences, the student does not achieve the learning outcomes defined in the course description, the remaining 20% may have to be compensated as determined by the responsible teachers of the course. All absences must be reported to the teachers in charge. The responsible teachers of the course will specify the necessary compensating assignments.

    Contact teaching and feedback (ratio 1:1): 60 hours.

    Student’s own and group work and student´s own processing (ratio 1:2): 80 hours.

    Total: 220 hours.
