LEARNING OUTCOMES

On completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  1. Associate the cellular structures of microorganisms with their roles in physiology.
  2. Explain microbial growth dynamics, discuss the associated cellular processes, and quantitatively assess population growth.
  3. Discuss the regulatory mechanisms of microorganisms and analyze them in terms of resource use and speed of adaptation.
  4. Examine diverse strategies of microorganisms to fulfil fundamental metabolic needs and analyze microbial metabolism using computational tools.
  5. Appraise the mechanisms of genomic changes in microbial cells and evolution.
  6. Discuss assessing microbial community composition and function.

Content

    This course will provide a comprehensive exploration of microbial physiology, unraveling the role of cellular structures, mechanisms, and processes in sustaining life across diverse environmental conditions and influencing the performance of cells in biotechnological applications. Encoding of the cellular capabilities in the genome and how the genomes can change and evolve will be investigated. Quantitative aspects of microbial physiology will be delved into and evaluated in single-species populations and microbial communities through computational tools.
