LEARNING OUTCOMES
1) The students will develop or improve skills in listening and comprehending a scientific seminar.
2) The students will learn to summarize and write a short report on the material presented.
3) The students will develop proficiency in delivering scientific seminars, effectively communicating research findings to a diverse audience.
4) The students will be introduced to some key topics in quantum technologies, including topological quantum matter and van der Waals quantum materials, algorithms for quantum computing and quantum machine learning, quantum thermodynamics and thermometry, mechanical quantum systems, quantum sensing and metrology, and fault-tolerant quantum computation and error correctio (aukeaa uuteen välilehteen)n.

CONTENT, ASSESSMENT AND WORKLOAD
Content
valid for whole curriculum period:
Students will be organized into four of five groups, each focusing on a distinct research topic within quantum technologies, such as: topological quantum matter and van der Waals quantum materials; algorithms for quantum computing and quantum machine learning; quantum thermodynamics and thermometry; mechanical quantum systems; quantum sensing and metrology; fault-tolerant quantum computation and error correctio. For each group, a senior scientist will give a 1-hour keynote masterclass dedicated to their research topic, which all students in the course are required to attend. Furthermore, within each group, students will deliver presentations on their own scientific works or conduct a review of the assigned topic. Attendees must participate in and prepare short reports on presentations delivered by their peers within their respective groups.
Assessment Methods and Criteria
valid for whole curriculum period:
Pass/fail. The students will pass if they attend all the masterclasses, they give a presentation, and they deliver at least 4 reports after attending the presentations in their own group. In any other case, the student will fail the course.
Workload
valid for whole curriculum period:
Each student must attend all the keynote masterclasses and at least 4 presentations in their own group. Each student must also write and upload as an assignment a short report about the presentations of the colleagues they attend. Finally, each student must give a presentation in their own group.
