CONTENT, ASSESSMENT AND WORKLOAD

Content
  • valid for whole curriculum period:

This course provides an overview of fluid mechanics from a mathematical perspective and introduces areas of active research. The objective is to show how different flow phenomena can be described and analysed using mathematical modeling techniques.

Course is targeted for graduate students in mathematics, physics and engineering. Basic background in physics (mechanics), vector calculus, linear algebra, ordinary differential equations and linear partial differential equations is recommended but not required.

Topics covered include: incompressible fluid flows, Navier-Stokes equations, low Reynolds number flows, irrotational flows, gravity waves, boundary layers, shallow-water equations.
