  • Sculpture – 1 Day task

    Anthropocene hat/helmet

During the introduction day you have heard how mankind’s relationship with the Earth is coming close to breaking point. Our built environment is no longer in tune with Nature (if it ever was). We exploit every natural resource for our own species’ benefit, yet we now find ourselves faced with global catastrophe due to climate change and pollution. This threatens our own existence as well as that of all living things on the planet.

Create a wearable hat or helmet with an “Anthropocene” theme. You MUST wear your creation for the discussion/critique at the end of the afternoon. You hat/helmet should be sculptural and visual. It can be a positive celebration of human existence, or something darker and haunting, suggesting the evil things humans have done to the world. You might celebrate nature and the archaic, or the contemporary man-made world. You can focus on one thing that fascinates you and create your hat or helmet for that, or take a much more general approach. You can let your imagination go wild!

You should use the provided cardboard sheets as a starting point and construction material. You can use these together with any other materials available, as well as paint, pens, etc. Your creation must be wearable, and should be at least 50cm x 50cm x 50cm. It may be much larger, and you can create other costume elements and stretch the concept of “hat” or “helmet” as far as you like.
