The bird illustration workshop examines and experiments with representational and abstract styles of illustrating birds. It is a drawing workshop in which participants can use whatever medium they would like to create bird drawings. Participants do not need to have any experience with illustration or birds. I would like to incorporate a walk to the Otaniemi bird tower in this workshop. I would teach basic bird anatomy for local species, discuss what features are important to illustrate for scientific illustration, and how to use these to create abstract and representational illustrations of birds.

    Learning outcomes

Participants of the Bird Illustration Workshop will ‘take home’ information on bird anatomy, local bird species, and scientific illustration. I would like to have a discussion on how scientific illustration shapes common knowledge of species. As a literal takeaway, participants will have at least two completed illustrations by the end of the workshop. One illustration will be representational. The other will be abstract.
