    After the course, the participant will be able to:

    • take into account the principles of constructive alignment in programme development.
    • reflect the general guidelines and process for curriculum development in relation to developing your degree programme
    • co-develop the degree programme together with the teaching team involved in the programme
    • get acquainted with different tools (e.g., curriculum mapping, workload calculation) in developing the learning outcomes, content and pedagogical solutions of the degree programme
    • make a plan for continuous development in the degree programme

      • Before the first session there is a pre-assignement with three parts: 

        A) Reading task (article) 

        Get to know the article below (Curriculum in higher education research (2016) by Johanna Annala, Jyri Lindén and Marita Mäkinen). 

        When reading the article, think how do you see your own programme/major in relation to the different curriculum approaches mentioned in the article? We will discuss the topic in our first session. 

        B) Get acquainted with the Aalto guidelines and materials concerning curriculum development

        C) Group introduction (discussion forum) 

        Introduce your group and your motivation to others. 

        Prepare to present your group as well as the development project topic of your group to others.

        Exercise option 1: Designing the ILO's and curriculum mapping

        PHASE 1: DESIGNING THE ILO’S

        (If your programme/major already have formulated the intended learning outcomes, you can move on to the phase 2)

        1. Discuss with your group about the aim of the programme and try to clarify it for example to three bullet points
        2. Then, begin to draft 1-3 learning outcomes for the programme/major based on this clarification

        PHASE 2: CURRICULUM MAPPING

        1. Open the curriculum mapping –template for your group from below
        2. Fill in the intended learning outcomes of your programme/major and begin to map them with the courses (you can find further instructions from the template)
        Feel free to add things to the template or use it the way that suits your needs best. If you wish to fill a blank template, you can find it from here: Curriculum mapping


        Exercise option 2: Curriculum development process

        1. Open the template for your group from MC
        2. Discuss with your group, on which timescale you will do the exercise. Slide 1 in the template is for the current curriculum period, slide 2 is for longer term.
        3. Discuss and document in the template a) the goal of your development work b) the phases you can identify in the process c) concrete actions that you should take d) expected goals of the actions e) the actors f) the tools

        A a part of the course you will be developing curriculum from your point of view in groups. You have also a mentor to help you with your task.
        Your mentor is mentioned in the lists of groups (mainly your school's pedagogical specialist).

        1. Please e-mail your mentor and describe and tell about your particular development area in this course.
        2. Please arrange a meeting with your mentor (= in practice suggest time options), for instance, to August, when you have returned from vacation.
        3. In the meeting with your mentor, please agree how to continue with (e.g. what kind of support you need).
