The 2022 Urban Design studio examines resilient design thinking - how can the different aspects of resilience be interpreted and implemented through design, and how these aspects can assist in building inclusive and sustainable communities.

The scale of the inquiry is the neighborhood, and as a concept, the neighborhood refers to both the physical parameters of the built environment as well as its immaterial aspects.

The studio asks the question: how can the physical contexts enhance different aspects of resilience, in both material and immaterial terms? Resilience as a concept offers a holistic approach to sustainability by emphasizing the systemic understanding of sustainability - how everything is interconnected.

In the studio resilience is understood from the point of view of evolutionary resilience in which the crucial points of inquiry are time scales, from short to long term, the capability of the built environment to adapt to unpredictable changes, and the possibility of urban design to embrace the diverse aspects of sustainability from ecological to social in different nested scales of the built environment - from the building to the city, and on to the global scale.

    -

Working with a site in East-Helsinki and taking as its starting point the growth targets of the City of Helsinki and its contested concept of ‘Bulevardization’, the studio is structured around a set of workshops that help us define the 1. goals, 2. tools and 3. design criteria for an urban proposal for our site, answering the questions:
    - How to design sustainable neighborhoods for today and with a long term focus
    - How to design for the unpredictable
    - How to create livable neighborhoods

The results of the studio will be articulated Urban Designs, providing a general conceptual plan of the site area and more detailed solutions in different scales – focusing on the scale of the neighborhood in its different dimensions (spatial and social dimensions), answering the challenge of future transformations through resilient solutions.
