The History of Architecture autumn studio engages the topical question of energy and climate emergency in world heritage sites – Suomenlinna sea fortress as a case study. In heritage management and architectural conservation more and more central question is sustainability, energy in all its forms and the question of sustainable local energy production in historical environments. Also resilience to more and more dramatic climatical phenomena is topical, during 2022 more than ever of globally valued built heritage was destroyed by weather.
The studio tasks are group works which examine the relation of architectural conservation and sustainability as group works. The case study is the Suomenlinna sea fortress by Helsinki seafront. The tasks are related to energy, energy production, sustainable tourism, architectural conservation and passive cooling/heating, history of sustainable energy (i.e. windmills) at Suomenlinna. The end result will be a publication and a small exhibition at Suomenlinna.
