Course content
"How to
visualize emotions?" Is our main question during these weeks.
This planning course
concentrates on finding ways to visualize emotion in film through a practical
scene rehearsal.
In week one you will visit Amos Rex Museum, and see Hans Op de Beeck's exhibition The Quiet Parade and write about your emotional exprience relating to it. The more precise assignment is given on Monday 7.11. Then after discussions and a theoretical approach to the
subject, the director, cinematographer, production designer do their own collaborative research through film analyses on how
emotions(s) are carried out in film narration, how they are visualised in
practice. In week two, students break down a scene the director has written and find together narrative solutions to the visual
world of the scene in hand. Students are encouraged to find another exhibition, a
performance or other form of art to back up their visual planning. During the
second week these artistic ideas are concretized and made into actual plans
which can be executed later. More detailed productional constraints to the
plans are defined during this planning course. Nevertheless, the scenes are to
be planned so they can be shot in exterior, in one day and in one location with 2
characters. And the scenes happen at NIGHT, which brings its own
challenges to visualising the atmosphere and the content.
The course
continues in weeks 4-5 with a crew check-ups / follow ups when the concrete plans
need to be ready. Crews do a loction brief at this point, and visit locations in weeks 9-10. The scenes are shot in weeks
11-12, post and final screenings are in week 13. The execution part will be scheduled separately later.
The responsable teachers are Saara Saarela (directing), Rauno Ronkainen (cinematography) and Kaisa Mäkinen (set design). There will also be a few visiting leturers: set designer Tiina Paavilainen and cinematographer Konsta Sohlberg.
Here you find the course schedule. The contact teaching sessions are marked in red. The first contact session is on Tuesday 8.11 at 10h30 in Class F101. All teaching is happening in Väre. Contact teaching days are Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays on both weeks.
