  • The aim of the week is to understand how the laminates are formed from laminae and how lamina (i.e. a single ply) material stiffness is assessed by the generalized Hooke’s law. This is beneficial on following weeks when we analyze structures made from the materials we define as part of the design. Then, we focus on the role of geometrically non-linear von Karman strains which allow us to model large deflections through moderate rotations of thin-walled structures (beams, plates and shells). These non-linear strains often improve the load-carrying mechanism and capacity of thin-walled structures enabling the lightweight design. The discussion events / question hours are:

Monday September 12th 2022, 10:15-12:00. L3. Lamina and Micromechanics (Zoom)

Wednesday September 14th 2022, 08:15-10:00. L4. von Karman strains (Zoom)

I recommend that you perform the following sequence of learning actions:

    1. Get acquainted with the Assignment of this week (see Assignments-section) to get hands-on understanding of the framework where we operate.

    2. Check the video lectures, lecture notes and selected journal and conference papers for this week in order to understand the fundamental ideas and theories we can use to solve the weekly problem. Make notes on them and how you understand them. Pay attention to any knowledge gaps you have.

    3. Join the question hour(s) on Monday or Wednesday to ask about any open issues. We can go through the theory and/or the assignments, the choice is yours. These sessions are reserved for you and the aim of the sessions is to fill the knowledge gaps.

    4. Start making the assignments and submit them for grading when you are done.
