      Finding lab partners Forum

In this activity you can find lab partners if you don't have a pair or group. All course participants will receive messages.

Tell which work(s) you would like to do and when, and reply other students if their plans are fine to you.

    • Course overview

The course collects under one roof the experimental exercises provided by three research groups Chemical Engineering, Industrial Chemistry, and Polymer Technolgy. As these research groups form the core of the traditional chemical engineering curriculum the course provides a wide variety of exercises covering various reaction types and separation units along with laboratory techniques and methods needed in research and development in process industry.

      Credits 5cr

Level of the Course Master studies

      Teaching Period:

         Chemical Engineering I-V

         Industrial Chemistry I-V

         Polymer Technology II-V

         Proces Control and Automation, I-V

      Workload:

        Lectures 5 h

        Work in laboratory 40 h
        Other independent studying 90 h

    • Learning Outcomes

The learning outcome of the course is the understanding of unit processes and unit operations along with the understanding of laboratory techniques involved in research and development in process industry.

After the course the student has experience in experimental laboratory work, simulation, process calculations and modelling. He/she understands the operation principles of the laboratory and industrial scale apparatus and can analyze the obtained experimental data and draw appropriate conclusions and report them.

    • Content

The student has to attend the opening lectures of the course where practicalities and safety aspects of laboratory work are reviewed.

The student have to perform a set of various laboratory exercises and complete the reports of each of these. This set of experiments has to be chosen in such a way that the student collects all together 5 cr of work from the list of the experiments provided by the research groups. It is advised to collect exercises from all of the research groups.

    • Booking of Exercises, Reporting, Grading and other practicalities

The exercises are done in pairs.

The exercises are booked beforehand with the contact person of the research group into which the exercise at hand belongs

The reports must be returned in two weeks from the experiment.

Each student returns an individual report.

Each report are graded from 0 to 5.

A report graded 0 is not considered returned.

The overall course grade is the weighted mean of the grades of the reports.

The student can start to work with a new experiment when the report of the previous one is returned.

If the student is not able to finish the course during one semester (autumn, spring) an accepted report can be used as a part of the course. However, if the report is not returned due time the practical part has to be redone.

The student can include in his/her studies one particular assignment only once.

    • Study Material

Each of the research groups will provide working instructions, theoretical material and other material (e.g. details of the reporting) for their experimental exercises.
