What is the course project?
The course project is a business plan for setting up a restaurant in Otaniemi. The project consists of seven sub-assignments, which are returned and graded with 0-2 points every week. Based on the feedback received on these assignments a final report is prepared and graded from 0-14 points in addition to the grades for the assignments already submitted. The project provides an excellent opportunity to apply the theoretical knowledge from the lectures to a practical case study.
The sub-assignments and the final report are scientific texts, so the substance of the text matters most. However the reporting must also be in order – citations, subheadings, listings, layout, use of figures, references to figures and tables, structure, finalisation, spelling, use of appendices. The Harvard system is the recommended style of referencing for this course.
The main mistakes in previous years have been 1) incomplete responses to the assignments and 2) not taking into account the feedback from the sub-assignments in the final report.
One member of your group returns the sub-assignment to the folder of your group. Please include the names and students numbers of all group members in the submissions. The file name should be {name of the group}.{number of the exercise}, e.g. Group15.A1.pdf.
Instructions for individual assignments can be found by opening the corresponding submission form below.

The group project will be done in groups of 4 students.
Enrolment for groups will be open: Sunday 4.9. at 12:00 - Sunday 11.9 at 23:59.
Students have to form groups on their own and then enroll in a group on this page.
You can use this Telegram chat to find a group, or post in the forum below. We also suggest you use them to find more members if your group consists of less than 4 persons, as smaller groups may have trouble keeping up with the workload especially later on.

This is the first case study video. You can watch it right here on MyCourses or click the link and go to Panopto. In the video, we apply the theory from lecture 2 to a specific company in a specific industry. The video also talks about your assignment at the end.
Note that you can play the video at increased speed if that works better for your learning :)

Due to an issue in Panopto's video prosessing, the video recorded for this submission seems to have been corrupted or failed to upload. Below, you'll find the link to last year's final submission/Midterm II recap video. Note that the deadline in the video is not accurate.
A more in-depth recap lecture for Midterm II will be held by prof Haahtela on Monday 28.11. at 10:15-11:00 in TU1. If you have any questions about the second midterm, you can contact @TUassari on Telegram or ask the professor during the recap lecture.

Final submission breakdown:
What is the final group project submission?
The final submission is a combination of the weekly assignments that you have already submitted. Together, they should be used to form a comprehensive business plan that you will submit in this assignment box along with your revised Excel assignment. Expected length for the submission is around 20-30 pages, but the quality of the content is more important than the amount.
General process for compiling your final submission:
- Compile all your previous weekly submissions into one document
- Go through your previous written submissions and, if applicable, improve them according to the grading feedback you received
- Edit and integrate the individual written submissions so text flows well from one topic to another
- Add indexed headings, sub-headings, a uniform design, and a table of contents (MS word has integrated tools for this)
- It's recommended to include well created graphs and diagrams
- Make sure your referencing is consistent, we highly recommend using the Harvard style
- Lastly, if applicable, fix your Excel submission according to grading feedback so the formulas and calculations are correct
The final submission will be graded according to the following criteria:- Idea (20%) 3,0p
Originality of the offering and concept, feasibility, finding a niche
- Reporting (20%) 3,0p
Source references, cataloging, layout, use of graphs, reference to graphs and tables, structure, finishing, spelling, use of attachments
- Substance (60%) 8,0p
Weekly assignments have been done correctly, deficiencies in assignments have been corrected according to feedback, figures used in the text are consistent throughout the final delivery, estimates are reasonable, concepts have been used correctly, good argumentation... (In case of groups excepted from 4 members, the size of the group affects the level of requirements of this section)
So max 14,0p
The final submission should be submitted as a PDF (written business plan) + Excel (revised accounting assignments from weeks 8 & 9)
The deadline is Friday the 25th of November at 18:00 - Compile all your previous weekly submissions into one document
