The major-specific part of the Doing Research in Art and Media course consists of 7 sessions and will be held together for the students in ViCCA and in VCD.

Learning outcomes
The course sessions will introduce research methods and practices that are often used in artistic and design research projects. The lectures will serve as points of departure for student's reflections on procucing a plan for a research project.
At the end of the course, students have the option to submit either a draft of their Master thesis to be further developed during the thesis seminar course, or a draft of an imaginary project planning, which will serve as a departure point for reflecting on a possible topic, and demonstrate the knowledge gained during the class. No further examination or essay is required.
Additionally, students will engage in exercises and work on a research poster.
Assessment will be based upon:
-Presence: 80% participation in the lectures, 6 lectures out of 7
Graded 1-5:
-Engagement and effort, active participation. Students need to complete the individual assignments (see individual assignments) before and during the class, take part in the discussions, ask questions, share their process
-Submission of the learning diaries: Students need to write a learning diary after attending each session. In this weekly assignment, they should illustrate how they can apply what has been explained in the lecture in relation to their own research
-Submission of literature review: Students need to choose 2 or 3 readings from the given list and write 300/400 words per paper. The writing will happen during the class, but the readings are a home assignment
Second and third-year students have the option to work on the literature review on articles/books chosen for their thesis
-Draft of the Project Plan: will be submitted at the end of the course.
The project plan should include:
- A title and a topic
- A short research statement (e.g., 1 paragraph)
- One or two simple research questions that the project intends to answer
- A list of relevant literature that the student has read or intends to read, explaining how it is related to the topic
- A brief discussion of the methodology intended to use in the research (based on what is covered in the course)
- (optional) A description of the artistic component (if this is part of the project)-Completion of the Research Poster

The plan should include:
- A title and the topic
- A short research statement (e.g., 1 paragraph): what is the intention of the project?
- One or two simple research questions that the project intends to answer
- A list of relevant literature that the student has read or intends to read, explaining how it is related to the topic
- A brief discussion of the methodology intended to use in the project research (based on what is covered in the course)
- (optional) A description of the artistic component (if this is to be included)The previous assignments (with the exception of the literature review) can be used to work on this assignment: if you are satisfied with the already submitted research statement and research question, feel free to use them. If not, you can use them as a departing point for this assignment and further work on them.
