    • M2: Instructions

This module gives you an overview of platform economy and its four fundamental pillars:

      • direct interaction
      • network effects
      • boost from digitalization and
      • boundary resources.

      M2: Learning materials

The module learning materials consist of pre-reading articles and three videos, one each for each of the three sections.

There is an edited audio 'soundtrack' of each video as a podcast if you prefer listening to podcasts over watching videos (the videos are discussions and do not contain visuals or 'slides'). These are identical with the videos except for a few ums ahms etc that have been edited out.

You should read the pre-readings before watching the videos or listening to the podcasts.

Additionally, there is a longer 25min podcast that covers basically the same topics as the videos but is not identical with the videos.

There is considerable overlap with this longer podcast and the videos (and some minor additional viewpoints), however. Therefore listening to this longer podcast is not necessary nor mandatory for covering the learning content of the course.

The podcast is an earlier 'practise run' for the videos and is offered here as extra material you could use e.g. to recap the videos with a little bit different 'presentation' and as a more convenient way to listen to the content on the move (without need to switch between files).

      M2: Assignments

The assignments in this module include three quizzes and two peer-reviewed workshops.

To pass this module you have to:

      • complete each of the three quizzes 5, 6 and 7-
      • do workshops 3 & 4, and
      • do the peer-reviews for workshops 3 & 4.
      • and complete the course feedback survey.

      The deadlines are:

      • Quizzes 5-7: Mon 28.11. 23:00
      • Workshop 3 & 4: Mon 28.11. 23:00
      • Peer-reviews of workshops 3 & 4: Sun 4.12. 23:00
      • Course feedback survey: Sun 4.12. 23:00 (at the end of M2)
        • You will also receive a request to fill the course official Aalto feedback form.
        • I am very grateful any and all feedback as it is vital for developing the course further, especially on a fully online course like this one.

There are three short quizzes in this module, one for each section/video.

        • You should watch the video before attempting the related quiz.
        • There is no time limit when doing the quizzes - so you can also re-watch the video when doing the quiz if you like.
        • You have two (2) attempts for each quiz. Your best score stands.
        • The quizzes, the videos (and podcasts) are listed below.

There are two peer-reviewed workshop assignments in this module.

        • Workshop 3 is an analysis of a randomly assigned well-known platform company.
        • Workshop 4 is a reflective essay assignment about your platform economy related learnings.
        • In both workshops you will peer-review three submissions from your peers.
          • Do remember peer-reviews for workshops 2, 3, and 4 cover 20% of your grade.
        • The workshops are listed below.

M2: Suggested 'timeline' for your study activities

Below is a suggested 'timeline' for your study activities in Module 2 that's the 'design idea' from pedagogical perspective.

Do check the estimated time needed for studying from the course syllabus early on and plan your schedule accordingly. The time window for doing the assignments may seem long but there are many of them.

Do note peer-reviews have much shorter time between them becoming available and their DLs compared to the assignments.

Also note that DLs of Module 1 and Module 2 partially overlap. You cannot plan to finish all of Module 1 assignments by their DLs and only then begin working on Module 2 assignments. Most of Module 2 DLs also fall soon after Midsummer. Plan accordingly!

The quizzes evaluate generic level 'know the basic concepts' learning that is then applied in more depth in the workshop assignment. Peer-review then gives you an opportunity to both recap the learning contents and even learn more as you see how other students have interpreted and used the concepts in the assignment. You could identify gaps in your own learning as well.

      Suggested timeline for Module 2:

      1. Read all the instructions and guidelines to form 'a big picture' of the module contents and requirements. Plan your study schedule.
      2. OPTIONAL: listen to the long 25min podcast to get an overview of the module topics.
      3. Then for each of the Quizzes 5-7:
        1. Read the pre-reading article.
        2. Watch the video / listen to podcast, at least once.
        3. Do the quiz (remember, no time limit in the quiz and you have two attempts).
        4. Repeat for the next quiz.
      4. Then for Workshops 3 and 4.
        1. Read the instructions carefully. Think what is required and how you can explicitly demonstrate in your submission that you have met the requirements.
        2. Begin working on your submission. Preferably, prepare draft versions that you improve before you submit.
        3. Once you have a 'ready' submission, analyse it and iterate if necessary: Does it clearly and explicitly address the assignment requirements? Would it be easy to evaluate that it does?
        4. Submit the workshop before the DL.
        5. Once peer-reviews open check that you can find the instructions and the submissions assigned to you in MyCourses (especially if you are unfamiliar with peer-reviews done in MyCourses). Ask for help in Discussion forum if not. Don't leave this to last minute.
        6. Do the peer-reviews. Use this as an opportunity to learn, both from evaluation guidelines and your fellow students.
      5. Fill and submit the course feedback surveys.

    • Platform Economy Fundamentals - podcast (25min)

      - Kimmo Karhu & Mikko Heiskala

This is the longer podcast discussed above under Learning materials.

Listening to this longer podcast is not necessary for covering the learning content of the course. However, you may consider doing it for the reasons discussed above.
