    This seminar course provides a baseline description of 5G mobile networks and its related key technologies combined with opportunitities to apply the technology in business and entrepreneurial settings. After the basics of 5G are introduced, contemporary 5G New Radio (NR) standards are covered including radio access network and core network parts. The technology is reflected with opportunities to apply it in business and entrepreneurial settings covering aspects of emerging markets in global south. Recent technology developments from the newly developed 5G NR standard beyond terrestrial human-centric communications are approached, including machine-centric communications and non-terrestrial networks.

    At the end of the course a successful student will be able to:

    • Recognize the evolution path of 5G mobile standards and the Key Performance Indicators of 5G classes of services

    • Be aware of the key technological components of 5G, with emphasis on the radio access network and the core network

    • Identify new entrepreneurial business ideas enabled by 5G technologies

    • Consider customer and user-centred development of emerging services with 5G technology

    • Iteratively improve these ideas by soliciting feedback and evaluating their market viability


    The course is organised collaboratively by three schools of Aalto University:

    The assessement of the course is done though parts consisting of a learning diary (1 ECTS), project work (3 ECTS), and onsite-quizzes (2 ECTS).

    The workload for the students (1 ECTS = 27 hours) is following:


    • 15 x 1-hour lectures per week = 45 hours

    • 6 x 30-min post-lecture quiz per week = 9 hours

    • Five inputs of the learning diaries per week (about 2 hours/input) = 30 hours

    • Group project during the whole teaching period (from Feb. to May): 81 hours of work in total (presentation and report)
