Visual Neuroscience—A joint course between University of Helsinki and Aalto University
Vision is one of the most studied and best understood disciplines in neuroscience. This course gives an introduction to current research methods and knowledge in visual neuroscience. The lecturers are active researchers that use behavioral/psychophysical, modelling, brain imaging and neurophysiological methods. Each give one lecture on their own specialty topic (such as low-level processing, visual working memory or cortical functional specification) with an emphasis on explaining research methods. The course will give a comprehensive view of visual information processing stages in the brain and shows how various research methods can be used complementary to investigate visual perception.Learning outcomes
By completing the course, the student gets basic understanding of brain and cognitive mechanisms of visual perception and gets a good overview of modern research methods. Student is able to describe some of the main findings in the field and explain the principles of neurophysiological, brain imaging and psychophysical methodologies when studying visual perception.Lecture schedule
24.3. Linda Henriksson (Aalto): Introduction to human visual system and brain imaging
31.3. Maria Olkkonen (UH & Microsoft): Neural mechanisms of color perception
14.4. Petri Ala-Laurila (UH & Aalto): From Photons to Behavior: Resolving Neural Codes and Visual Processing at the Sensitivity Limit of Vision
28.4. Ilmari Kurki (UH): Spatial vision and perceptual organization

Assessment practices and criteria
The seminar consists of six weekly face-to-face meetings, where participation is compulsory. Students are expected to read an article or book chapter for each meeting and take part in a quiz before each meeting. Students also prepare a short research paper in small groups. Evaluation 0-5 is based on quiz answers (50%), and quality of research paper (50%)Course codes at Aalto University and University of Helsinki
