  • The aim of the week is to give you the understanding on how beam elements can be used to reduce the size of the FE-models while considering the specifics of thin-walled structures properly. Thus, we introduce you the concepts of effective breadth, length and stiffness of representative beams for a thin-walled structure. We also show how the offset beam can be used with the plate or shell element or how you can model the periodic plates by using the lamination theory presented earlier during the course. This gives really good accuracy for the responses and allows a significant reduction on the size of the computational model. The discussion events / question hours are:

    Monday September 25th 2023, 10:15-12:00. L7. Offset beams (Zoom or Room K150, Otakaari 4)

    Wednesday September 27th 2023, 08:15-10:00. L8. Periodic plates (Zoom)

I recommend that you perform the following sequence of learning actions:

    1. Get acquainted with the Assignment of this week (see Assignments-section) to get hands-on understanding of the framework where we operate.

    2. Check the video lectures, lecture notes and selected journal and conference papers for this week in order to understand the fundamental ideas and theories we can use to solve the weekly problem. Make notes on them and how you understand them. Pay attention to any knowledge gaps you have.

    3. Join the question hour(s) on Monday or Wednesday to ask about any open issues. We can go through the theory and/or the assignments, the choice is yours. These sessions are reserved for you and the aim of the sessions is to fill the knowledge gaps.

    4. Start making the assignments and submit them for grading when you are done.
